Happy Birthday to Me!

Yes I am writing a post on my birthday -- because it has been the best one yet!  I also wanted to make a point this weekend to do as many possible things I enjoy...writing included.  Here goes the recap...

Saturday started out with me doing what else...taking a yoga class in the park.  Dee and Eli opted out and chose to walk around downtown Des Moines and catch Pokemon instead ;)  Afterwards we spent late morning/early afternoon at our favorite dance studio for fall registration.  There I captured this heartwarming photo of dad and son..

The rest of the day was spent taking a much needed nap so this momma would be prepared for her first night out on the town - WITH dad, and WITHOUT Eli...I thought about baby boy the entire time and of course missed his goofy expressions, but I think Grandma Paula enjoyed them for me :)
As for birthday presents??  Dee knows my nerdy self so well and purchased the new Harry Potter screenplay book for me (thanks babe)!  Baby man also chose this week to start taking his first steps, and I caught him on video Saturday night taking three big leaps to dad!  To say this mom is proud would be an understatement...

My night out on the town was then spent at a few of our old DSM stomping grounds (pre-Eli).  It included a FEW beverages, A LOT of friends, and ENORMOUS amounts of dancing and ridiculous photo ops...

One of my besties also attempted to surprise me this weekend, but thanks to Snapchat I made the connection she was already in town.  But in the wise words of my Big Birdie, "surprises are a bust at this point."  We then celebrated with selfies and bathroom dancing...

With today being my actual anniversary of birth, I wanted to continue my celebrations, but on a much low(er)-key level.  This morning baby boy and I woke up early to make the first church service, while Dee unfortunately had to work.  Eli and I then grabbed lunch with our friend Bailey, who afterwards introduced me to my new favorite store, Charming Charlie's.  In her exact words:  "It's like Claire's/Icing for adults...with clothes."  Plus it's affordable - and you know how I'm always looking for a good deal!  I treated myself to their jewelry sale...

...while Eli and Bailey amused themselves ;)

Now that we're home, Eli is enjoying a Spongebob episode while I type this quick post. I'm sure the rest of the day will be filled with playtime, dance-offs (already been a few), feedings, naps (maybe for Eli, too - HA!) and then join Dee for his dance practice.

To some, this birthday may not be by definition the "craziest" I've ever experienced, but all of these "small" joys have made this girl one happy chick.  I no longer go out every weekend, but seeing my little man grow and learn, while also watching Dee be an amazing daddy....there's really no perfect word to describe how lucky I am.  Wouldn't change my "normal" or "boring" life for anything else!

When "Food As Medicine" Isn't Always Helpful

I recently listened to a podcast (I'll share the link below) that really inspired me to write my own post on the topic. Throughout my dietetics career, I myself have spouted the term "Food is your medicine" to clients in a number of different settings.  Let's be honest - it's simple, catchy, almost tongue in cheek; hence why it's used in sooooo many taglines by professionals giving nutrition education.  I think most people who use it aren't intending harm, but rather trying to meet clients or audiences where they are at.  In our dietetics curriculum, we are taught that there are many health benefits to consuming a variety of nutrients, so at the surface level, treating what you eat as "medicine" might feel useful at first. So where could this otherwise harmless statement actually become harmful ?  In my experience working with disordered eating patients, "Food as medicine" can become a way for the ED to twist and factualize the client&#

What Health at Every Size REALLY Means

The Health at Every Size movement (also known by it's acronym, HAES) has a mission to provide compassionate health care to ALL.  Straight from it's web resource www.haescommunity.com : " Health at Every Size® principles help us advance social justice, create an inclusive and respectful community, and support people of all sizes in finding compassionate ways to take care of themselves. But first, let's start from the beginning.  In 2010, before this was considered a "movement," Dr. Linda Bacon wrote & published the book Health at Every Size , which was based on her groundbreaking research to de-stigmatize our society's view on weight and health.  If you try to order a copy of this book online, its description on Amazon says it all: "Fat isn't the problem.  Dieting is."  Contrary to popular belief, HAES is NOT about foregoing all health and nutrition information - in fact it isn't even anti-weight loss!  Let's dive into t

POEM: "Rad Women Everywhere"

Image taken from Poetry and Feminism website. Illustration by Shyama Golden.     Whoever told you your body was shameful is a LIAR. Because guess what? My body does not have to apologize for EXISTING.   That new diet or weight loss strategy is a HOAX. Reality says otherwise: Those numbers and calories are IRRELEVANT. Girl, you don't need to read the menu.   The history books may write us off as emotional, hysterical, and UNIMPORTANT. Yet our bodies are put on pedestals For others to judge or compliment, Like that's the only part of us that's of VALUE.   The patriarchy would rather   SILENCE us . Internalizing their belief that "We don't matter." When in fact we should be WORSHIPPED. As we have the power to continue this humanity, ...or not.   To all the rad women: you are BRAVE; you are SENSATIONAL; and you are ENOUGH. One day they will be screaming from the mountain tops; R
